Jonas Magram Jazz Quintet
Following rave reviews for its performance at the recent Iowa Motion Picture Association Awards and Bernie Sanders’ Rally, the Jonas Magram Jazz Quintet (JMJQ) brings its vocal-centered jazz back to The Depot Friday Night, May 31st, at 8PM.
The show will feature Jonas Magram (vocals and tenor sax), Steve Hillis (piano), Fred Hucke (trumpet), Fred Swartz (drums) and Brian Quinn (double bass).
Though appreciated for his vocal mastery of a wide range of music styles – he’s recorded three CDs – Jonas is especially at home when uniquely interpreting legendary jazz standards. As one JMJQ fan puts it, “It’s rare that a single vocalist can melt your heart one moment and make you want to get up and dance the next the way Jonas does.” In addition to vocals, Jonas delivers some hip tenor saxophone.
JMJQ also features Steve Hillis’ keyboard wizardry, combining technical mastery and refined style, perfect for JMJQ’s music.
Fred Hucke, Fred Swartz, and Brian Quinn, all highly seasoned musical talents, round out JMJQ’s horn and rhythm sections.
JMJQ’s music ranges from Bossa Novas – “Autumns Leaves,” “Call Me” – to sultry love songs – “How Deep Is The Ocean,” “Under My Skin” – to foot-stompin’ Ellington blues – “It Don’t Mean A Thing If It Ain’t Got That Swing” – to classic instrumentals – “Stolen Moments,” Lullaby of Birdland,” – every tune a treat for heart and soul. The quintet also will perform some of Jonas’ Latin and Blues originals.
